I was expecting a 4-color printed book. Every other Deitel book I have is in color, this one is not. This book uses many shades of grey, along with black and white, instead of color. It's very hard to follow, the greyscale doesn't help at all.The book seems very poorly organized. Over and over it make statements like "which will be covered in a later chapter". All I can think is "ok fine, why did you bring it up then?" This book wastes a lot of space telling you what it's going to do instead of just doing it.And then at the same time I guess I was expecting an unabridged C++11 book. My other Deitel C++ books are much thicker and much more thorough. Only a few chapters in and I'm already seeing several items described as "beyond the scope of this book".Compiler error messages from three different compilers are not helpful. I thought I was buying a C++11 book, not a compiler error message book. I'd think compiler error message would be beyond the scope of a C++11 book.Unless you're a true beginner at C++ and love greyscale, I would say buy something else.
My kindle version on PC does not exhibit the issue mentioned by Carol, but there are missing symbols all over the place. For example the text refers to code snippets such asx=y++;as "the postincrement operator (++)", but it would actually appear as "the postincrement operator ( )". A specific example copied directly from kindle is:Deitel, Paul J.; Deitel, Harvey M. (2013-03-21). C++11 for Programmers (2nd Edition) (Deitel Developer Series) (p. 98). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition."Notice that the conditional operator (?:), the unary operators preincrement (+ +), predecrement (--), plus (+) and minus (-), and the assignment operators =, + =, -=, *=, /= and %= associate from right to left."But this actually shows up in kindle as"Notice that the conditional operator (?:), the unary operators preincrement ( ), predecrement ( ), plus ( ) and minus ( ), and the assignment operators =, + =, -=, *=, /= and %= associate from right to left."That is four missing symbols in a single sentence. It would really be nice to hear back from a digital editor at Prentice Hall or amazon on this issue.
I've been programming regular C for many years, but in the meantime C++ has evolved from a simple spinoff to a very sophisticated language that doesn't really belong in the same league as C anymore. I want to make the switch now, so I got myself a stack of books. Still, some books aren't really helping me to overcome the steep learning curve for a newbie.So I turned to this one, and I felt quickly that this will be THE book to get me over that newbie threshold. It has great didactic qualities and makes me all comfortable. One of the unique features these authors use, is that every single code example is worked out as a full program, ready to be compiled and executed.I expect that if I really want to comprehend all the subtleties that modern C++ offers, I will have to get a more advanced book from my stack and read on. But my feeling is that many books settle at that intermediate starting point, and only few accomodate for the novice reader. Perhaps Lippman's "C++ Primer" could be a viable alternative, but that one weighs twice as much :-)
If the title were "C++ for programmers" I would rate it at 8. Yes there is a little C++11 in it, but not at all like the title suggests. C++11 paragraphs are marked in the sidebar, and less than 5%.I purchased Josuttis (below now) with it, and the combination is perfect! I will mark Josuttis at maximum and then grade Dietel up to 8/10.
I was disappointed with the contents of the book. This is an overprised textbook for beginners, yet the book description wrote about C++11, which is not covered.
I like the book for textbook for my students (I'm a professor in Sofia University) so I will recommend it to all my CS students.

I'm keen on learning C++11 and found this as one of the few books around that claimed to teach the new standard and got a copy for my tablet through which I've read many a technical book. Big mistake, particularly considering the relatively high price. My complaints are two-fold.First the prose is ponderous. The author goes into excruciating detail regarding every line of code in the examples, repeating himself ad nauseum. This may be a good way to fill space, but not a good way of teaching an adult audience.Second, the Kindle version of this book is broken. Touching a link to see a reference gets you where you wanted to go, but then it loses knowledge of your jumping-off point (no 'back' option) so you have to remember your numeric location or just wind up searching for where you were. Adding to the pain is the fact that there's no table of contents and thus no reasonably quick way to find your place in this book.Too bad I had to give this book one star; it doesn't deserve even that.
