About the Author
Wendy Laura Belcher is an award-winning author, academic editor, international lecturer, and professor. She designed one of the first publication focused writing courses for graduate students and junior faculty in the nation, and for ten years has conducted such courses at the University of California, Los Angeles, and in research institutions around the world, including those in Norway, Malawi, Sudan, and Egypt. These popular workshops are based on her twenty years of experience as an academic editor, including eleven years managing an ethnic studies press and the peer-reviewed journal of record in the field, Aztlan: A Journal of Chicano Studies, as well as her two master's degrees in the social sciences and a doctorate in the humanities. Â She is also a published nonfiction author, whose memoir about her childhood in Ethiopia and Ghana, Honey from the Lion: An African Journey, won a Washington State Governor's Writers Award and honorable mention in the Martha Albrand/PEN Society Award for first book of nonfiction. She is now an associate professor of African literature in the Princeton University Department of Comparative Literature and the Center for African American Studies.

For all that this book contains a lot of very useful information (and it does), it's misleadingly titled. This book won't tell you how to write an article: it will tell you how to REwrite an article. It already assumes that you have a complete draft before you even begin, so 12 weeks doesn't include research, planning or drafting at all. Somehow, the title "Rewriting your Already-Drafted Journal article in 12 Additional Weeks" doesn't have the same appeal, but it is more accurate.
THIS is the book that should be on the shelves of all faculty and in every academic library. I bought it just as I was handing in my dissertation, preparing to move on publishing the 'D' as articles. When hit a brick wall of major revisions on the dissertation, the revisions process outlined in this book gave invaluable information to jump through that last hoop.Now that nightmare is behind me and I'm a Dr - I often go back to it as a reminder and support in the process of getting articles 'out there'. Just got one accepted and another is in press - yay!.
This book was a godsend for me when I was attempting to publish my first manuscript written back in 2010. It has a ton of practical advice, as well as templates for contacting editors, invaluable information about the writing process itself, ways to dealing with rejection, and how to target journals. It's comprehensive, yet everything included seems vital.
Writing a journal article seems impossible in its own right, but sounds even more so when it's supposed to happen in 12 weeks. However, Belcher's plan is actually helpful and doable. Even if it takes more than 12 weeks, there's some helpful tips and truths in Belcher's book that can at least get you started, many of which I pulled from while finishing my dissertation. Her section on writing arguments is so clear and concise I've actually started using it to teach my Freshman Comp courses. I highly recommend this book, and that doesn't happen often when it comes to "here's how to write" guides. Belcher doesn't offer platitudes or false hope - she's very realistic about how the writing process works.
I've never written a book review on Amazon before. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that, at least in some ways, this book changed my life. It took something that I thought was impossible and showed me, step by step, how to do it. And now I've done it many times, every single time using this book.
Clear and focused with excellent examples. Immediately got me writing after an eight month writer's block. A few suggestions, i.e. Physically visiting journal stacks, are becoming outdated. Our library doesn't stock books, so a revision to focus on electronic databases and journals would be more helpful. While not all of the tops were applicable and didn't necessarily work for my style, but this book is well worth it! Talking about what to expect from reviewers, emphasis on peer feedback, and discussing the irrationality of my fears of writing was really fantastic.
Appreciate the detailed steps the workbook outlines. Good use of examples from a range of disciplines. Encouraging tone that motivates writers to persevere.I did struggle with the chapter on grammar/syntax revisions but honestly that's probably because in the e-book it came out as huge chunks of text (without white space) and often employed caps to emphasize. Simply made it hard to read clearly.
Great resource for getting started and staying focused. I took the advice of the author and started a writing group that is focused on getting an article complete and published. We have gotten much further than I ever did on my own. I actually feel like an article will happen. The book breaks down the steps and makes the process less confusing. If you are someone that needs to publish or you will perish you need this book.
