Ancient Egypt, and in particular, the 18th Dynasty, is one of my favorite periods to read about. Although there are many books about Ahkenaten and Nefertiti, this one is right up there with the best of them. This one was a Kindle Scout selected publication that I voted for and I am glad it was chosen. Well written and entertaining. I hope the author comes out with a follow up on Ramses.
The story of Akenaten or Amenhotep IV continues to fascinate and to serve as fodder for a seemingly endless supply of fictional portrayals. Terrance Coffey adds to the long list with this novel of the 18th dynasty of ancient Egypt and it's brief turn to the worship of the solar disc, the Aten. I found the story too often wooden, plodding through its semi-historical passage, while at times leaping over many years to forge toward some sort of conclusion. The tale encompasses the reigns of Amenhotep III, his apparently deformed son, the notorious Akenaten, his wife, Nefertiti, their son the most famous one of all, Tutankamun, a supposed brief reign of the viewer, Ay (though there is littoral evidence of such), and Horemheb, general of the army of Egypt. At the end, another general, Ramases, is introduced who will begin the glorious 19th dynasty. I could conjure little enthusiasm for the novel, though I love this period of history. I sensed that Coffey's pleasures in the study of the period finally outstripped his artistic abilities to capture its genuine wonders. A for effort but C in execution.
I really enjoyed the interesting story-telling approach to personalizing and chronologically clarifying the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, their families, religious leaders and influences, wars, tragedies, glory, and other details of their lives. Having viewed documentaries and touring King Tut exhibits, this fluid and interesting novel made it come to life. The author's skill in his craft is refreshingly capable. I look forward to Dynasty 19's release.
Intoxicating storytelling! With every turn of every page, I was drawn in by the unwavering attention to character development, as well as the depth of painting a realistic picture of what likely occurred during the ancient Egyptian New Kingdom period. I could easily see this book being turned into an epic movie of Cleopatra proportion! If you enjoy this era, and the shenanigans of Ancient Egypt...Valley of the Kings is definitely a must read!
I enjoyed the characters being fully fleshed out as one can really only do in a novel of real times and real people so long ago. This period in Egyptian history has always been fascinating to me so I could appreciate the research that went in to this. The writing was very good and the book just flowed. Whether you are familiar with this particular point in history or not, it's a wonderful and entertaining read. Fans of Nefertiti will enjoy this.
After reading so many books, it becomes hard to hold one's interest, but this one did with so many twists and turns. How anyone can know for certain the actual events for so far back in time is probably near impossible, but this was very believable and fascinating regarding culture and religious beliefs and customs. How sad so many of the engineering secrets and medicines have been lost to modern civilization....Good book! It was a bit "vague" in parts, but the characters were strong and sometimes inspiring, or disappointing....
As a history buff O found this book to be of such interest I read the last few chapters again and I don't usually do that.
I read it in one sitting. It portrayed the 18th Dynasty in a brand new light for me, providing another possible vision of what issues they faced and how they approached them. I'm always on the look for new books on Egypt and this one did not disappoint. If you're looking for an intriguing read, this is the book for you.
