Review

One of the Best Books of the Year - Today, Los Angeles Times, People, Bustle"The book, which distills the 1.9 million photographs that Souza took of Obama's eight years in the White House down to about 300 images, it as once warm and nostalgic, worshipful and respectful, sad and wistful-in a sense, not so different from the framed JFK portraits that everyday Americans hung in living rooms, right through the Nixon administration. Less than 12 months since Obama left office (indeed, the very moment he left his office is included), it also reads like a lesson in how fast things can change."―Chicago Tribune"Here are the qualities that radiate from these photos of the former President and his family, all taken by Souza during his eight years as official White House photographer: intelligence, kindness, warmth, integrity. Drink it in."―People"For all its exuberant glimpses of the president at play, the dominant mood of this 'intimate portrait' remains earnest. In conveying both the weight of the office and President Obama's full engagement with its demands, Souza fuels our admiration--and stokes our regret."―The Chicago Tribune"Souza, chief official White House photographer for Obama's two terms, was on hand for history--documenting our first black president, and a pretty photogenic one at that. Souza's book, an instant best seller, includes many iconic images we've seen before, but its most poignant moments are the least public--like one of the president and his daughters frolicking in the snow at the White House."―USA Today"Mr. Souza has honed an ability to crouch and shrink to capture the details no one else sees...With Mr. Obama giving few public statements since leaving office, Mr. Souza's words and images will have to work as a conduit for now."―The New York Times"Obama: An Intimate Portrait reminds us of how... glamour functioned in the previous Administration... However glamorous, this man has more power than seems human."―The New Yorker"Perfect for gifting... lets readers into Obama's life in the White House, around the world, and into the spirit of his chapter in American history."―Travel + Leisure"This book will appeal to any fan of history."―ABC7 Eyewitness News"The 300 photographs in the book are a remarkable account of President Obama's eight years in the White House, from events of historic significance to quiet moments with his wife and daughters and the family dogs. They feature world leaders, diplomats, celebrities and everyday people. You see the President in times of contemplation, worry and sorrow. You see him, too, in high spirits, joy and playfulness."―New Orleans Times-Picayune

I'd like to say up front here that this is one of those reviews where I am struggling so hard to put thoughts into words, because of how many thoughts I have, and how difficult it is for me to express them. I grew up as a staunch Republican in rural Idaho, and never really came into contact with anything that challenged my beliefs. I graduated high school in 2000, worked a few jobs here and there, still in rural Idaho, and then after 9/11 I joined the military, where I was surrounded by many like-minded people.I voted for McCain in 2008, and then Romney in 2012, and felt a crushing defeat at both losses. I hated the Obamas, and all the news stations I watched, and people I talked to, reinforced that hatred. And then, about a year after his second election, I woke up. I took off the blinders, and realized that through and through, I was a Democrat. All the things I cared about in life, despite my Republican upbringing, were things the Democrats cared about as well, and I jumped in with both feet. I got involved in politics for the first time in my life beyond presidential voting. I became an activist for several issues that mattered the most. And I absolutely fell in love with the Obamas. Such advocates for equality and change, and Obama himself, instead of the fiend I'd thought him, turned out to be a calm voice in the face of panic. A steady leader in the face of fear. He was funny and personable, and every time I heard him speak I felt suddenly prouder and more patriotic. I looked at him, and thought yes, THIS is what America stands for! And then shortly after that, I realized I was only going to have him as MY president, for three years. Just three. Because all the rest of that time I wasted being blind and hateful. I had been robbed, and it was utterly heartbreaking!!!I couldn't afford this book. I tried my local library first, then drove straight to Barnes and Noble when the library didn't have it, and stayed to read it there... And it was wonderful. It was to me, especially, because of how many years I lost. How many stories I missed. How much time I'll never get back. He should have been "my" president all along, and losing him, and his family, after so little time, has made my struggle this last year all the greater. I'm not really the kind that normally runs off to scrounge around for books they can't afford, but this is the second photography book of the Obamas I've done so for, and it captured my heart as much the second time, as it did the first.UPDATE: Thanks to so many of the kind, heartwarming offers, I have received a copy of this book. Thank you, to those who offered, and to the ones who sent it. I am so grateful and honored.

I bought this for my wife for our anniversary and she absolutely loved it. It is a beautiful compilation of moments in time from the presidential years of Mr. Obama captured in the excellent photographic work of Mr. Souza. There are pictures capturing the pressures of the presidential office as well as intimate moments between Mr. Obama and Mrs. Obama, their children, the officials with whom he served and the citizens he served. Some of them are engaging, some are amusing and some are quite moving. It is already one of her most cherished keepsakes and yes - although we have dozens of bookcases all through our house stuffed to the gills with many valuables books, first editions and even signed editions - this one sits on our living room coffee table and I'm certain will remain there for many years to come. I would also like to mention that we're both senior citizens and we're both caucasian and we both live in the midwest...but we also both still do our own thinking and have managed to retain our hearts and our humanity. Thank you, Mr. Souza, for a wonderful work.BTW - As I write this there are 25 one star reviews of this book. Only five of those are reviews based on verified purchases. Of those, three were because the book they received was damaged and two were because the buyer thought they were buying the Kindle version rather than the hardcover version. The other twenty one star reviews are by people who have not actually bought the book, have probably never seen the book, and consist of nothing more than political rants. The Amazon review feature is not a political forum and people who elect to use it as such are abusing a very valuable asset Amazon offers to its customers.

I had preordered this book a few months ago and until our mail carrier delivered it just now I had actually forgotten about it. As you can surmise by the number of stars as well as title of the review I absolutely love this addition to my coffee table, except for one reason. JUST Looking at either the back OR front cover makes this Caucasian, 63 year old, retired female high school social studies teacher living in upstate New York makes me both sad and happy. No disrespect, but it’s like remembering a deceased pet. Why a pet and not a human ? Well, I guess it is the idea of the unconditional love that I have personally felt by dogs.....and the fact that it least in my mind that is what our former President and First Lady gave us for 8 years. The pictures in this treasure of a book reminds us what used to be but what can be again. The photo choices made by Mr. Souza perfectly meldwith so many of my personal memories and I thank him very much. I pray that someday Obama haters or hopefully their children will view the pictures in this “must have” Obama memorabilia and appreciate not only the historical significance of this man to US and world history but also feel his unconditional love of America ; its history, culture and people in every page. Additional copies have been added to the Christmas Lists of family and friends.P.s. BO wrote the foreword. :)

Beautiful book. Souza captures the humility, humor, and humanity of a special man. Obama wasn't perfect, but seeing his two-term administration, not riddled by scandal or buffoonery, captured in this historic volume brought tears to my eyes. As one reviewer pointed out, darkness follows light, but I would add that light will chase out darkness again.

As I thumb through the pages, I realize how much of my vision of President Obama was formed by the photographs of special moments captured by Souza. To have them all in one collection is a pleasure, as he was a pleasure. Genuineness. Thoughtfulness. Compassion. Empathy. All caught on film. President Obama's true and lasting legacy is that we, as a country, know that we can do, and have, and be better than we are today.
