I look forward to recommending Reclaiming Home to my book club. Several members have travelled the routes this author traveled: Pretoria to Pietermaritzburg, Durban to Port Elizabeth, Cape Town to Kimberly to Johannesburg. What they missed on the usual tourist route was the companionship of a friendly, well-educated, Black South African to explain the social dynamics before, during and after the imposition of Apartheid by the minority, Africaans-speaking white govertment that rose to power in the 1950s. In 2004, families such as the authors were getting some compensation for their forcible removal 50 years earlier from homes and businesses in areas that the government had decreed to be reserved for whites. Five stars for Reclaiming Home and the insights it provides on how South Africa is slowly changing in the 21st century,

Malepe takes us with her on a remarkable journey. It is a journey worth taking

Reclaiming Home is witty, wise, sad and entertaining. Heartbreaking reality is woven with past struggles, s/heroes, and ever evident post-apartheid racism. It is exciting to go with Lesego Malepe on this wondrous homecoming journey.

In RECLAIMING HOME, her beautiful and insightful memoir, Lesego Malepe becomes our trusted and generous friend as she journeys with us through her home country of South Africa. As we travel with her, by bus and commuter taxi, staying with old friends and making new ones, we learn about her love for the country of her birth, her brother’s terror when he arrived as a teenage political prisoner on Robbin Island, and her impressions of a nation shaped by decades of apartheid. We are swept away by the story, and the people, like the bus driver who gives her his phone number to call should she ever need his help, the student who wishes she had a bicycle as she trudges the two-mile walk back home carrying armfuls of textbooks, and the Robbin Island tour guide who, many years before, had been a prisoner on the island and witnessed the guards half bury a fellow prisoner in the sand and then urinate on his face. Her prose is lyrical as she masterfully moves between the cruelty of the apartheid system, to the human and natural beauty of this magnificent country. In the end we are left with a deep sense of history, of hope, and faith in the human spirit. This is a must read for anyone interested in South Africa from an insider’s perspective.

Lesego’s journey Reclaiming Home reflects hope in spite of what she and her family suffered during apartheid in So. Africa when her mother and grandmother lost their property and life sustaining business. Worst of all her brother was imprisoned in Robben island for 22 years. Lesego’s recent travels in South Africa include the pleasure of visits to friends in various parts of the country. She also visits Robben prison weeping for her brother who fortunately returned home after his ordeal. She talks a bit about the reparation money, now offered through the courts that pay for the loss of land suffered during apartheid. This sounds similar to our own race riots in Tulsa OK in 1921. There was a study done, but reparations were nixed in our courts. Her journey is a must read.

Malepe successfully tells her story through her diary of her journey back to South Africa. Now able to travel through important places, her stops along the way are filled with conversation, dispensing knowledge to the reader about post-apartheid culture, economics and every day living. Journal entries are heartwarming, informative and engaging and keep the reader moving along with her through her eleven months of travels as she reclaims home.

This book takes you on a journey that feels similar to the history of the U.S.. I feel like I boarded the plane with the author and became very interested in the people she met on her journey.

Wonderful book.Visiting south Africa is in my plans. Malepes reclaiming home book will be a perfect companion.I have learned so much from this book. The writting is excellent and brings the complex society to life .I believe students at all levels can learn how to keep a diary from this well fascinating book
