Unlike the Lonely Planet guide we also bought, this one's has All the info we need. The other once is missing some of the national parks even!
Good basic overview of Madagascar. Since the only really choices for travel guides to Madagascar are this one and the dismal Lonely Planet guide(or, as I call them, the Homely Planet Guides), there isn't a lot of choice. However, there are two many personal experience stories of no relevance to the casual traveler. Also, many things are left out which are significant, in an attempt to be PC. For example, it mentions that the most unusual looking lemur is called Ah Ah and is very rare and gives suggestions for seeing one. However, the book neglects to mention the reason it is so rare is that it is considered an omen of bad luck, and, when one is seen by the locals, it is killed in an attempt to ward off the bad luck.I will also mention I bought this as a Kindle book, and getting to the appropriate part of the book is not easy. From now on, all my travel guides will be hard copies.
I know this is the best guide for Madagascar, where I have lived for 3 years. I have an older version, but just bought this hoping for updates on lodging recommendations, but I'm disappointed to see hotels that closed over a decade ago that are still in the latest version. I get that you can't visit everywhere for each update, but through guide contacts, reader feedback, and email, it should not be that hard to check this for an update.
Largely uSeful book
Good book! Covers a lot of material. Madagascar is HUGE, though, so it doesn't go into depth on a lot of areas.
This book contains a great deal of information and facts about Madagascar. It would be very useful if you already know your itinerary and need a book on the ground. However, if, like us, you are trying to figure out where to visit within Madagascar, it is not very helpful. It only provides a two page highlight of recommended places to visit. But does not go into any details and any views about many of the locations. I much prefer the Michelin approach of providing stars or different color highlights on the map to indicate best places to visit or like Fodors with the best tourist spots in the various parts of the country.
WONDERFUL COUNTRYA country everyone should see and travel if they can.Book very helpful in planning trip and while on trip
