This book gives a good overview of the country including the recent problems with Russian incursions in Crimea and the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces. Having been to the Ukraine a number of times their advice is solid. As with any book they have a limited amount of space to cover an entire country, leaving out my main stomping ground of Cherkassy, however they cover everything around it. If you decide to do a rental car be prepared for an adventure. The roads are poorly marked by western standards and condition of the roads can vary from excellent to abysmal. I recommend doing the majority of your driving during daylight hours and to be prepared for some wild driving on the part of the natives. There is an upside to having a car, you can travel wherever you want, when you want...and there is a lot to see!
I've been a huge fan of the Lonely Planet Guides for decades. But print just isn't able to keep up with online info these days. I stayed in an excellent hotel in Odessa that is not even mentioned in this book. However, I've traveled a lot in Ukraine, and feel this guide is very good for the smaller cities.
I purchased this as a gift for a man in a nursing home. After glancing at the pictures, even I would like to visit there. I'm sure he was pleased with the book. It is more for travelling or visiting, but the pictures were very nice.
Liked the walking tour in Kiev and Lviv.Could do better in practical information such as transportation from airport to city. Uber works well and inexpensive.Also update with internet connectivity such as getting a SIM card upon arrival and have access immediately

i highly recomend anyone and everyone go to this most wonderful country. there is so much to see,experience and teh food is excellent. the people are very hospitibale and friendly. my friend who is a travel agent / tour guide is mentioned in this book. her company JC Travel goes above and beyond to ensure you get the best of your time there. i myself took the tour of chernobyl and to say this place is most blessed is an understatement. seeing is believing. pripyat leaves nothing to the imagination. of all the places i have seen in ukraine....poltava is and will always remain my favorite of places.its considered my 2nd home.despite what you hear and read ukraine is very safe.i am most fortunate to have wonderfull friends there whom i consider like my own family.if you go even once...no matter what city you go to....you will want to go back. every town, city, and village is different. their culture is just astounding. to say ukraine is a country worth fighting for..SAYS IT TO ME. teh maidan square, mother land statue and the museum dedicated to the holodomor....are palces to see when in kiev / kyiv.disney put it best with lilo and stitch....OHANA MEANS FAMILY.NOBODY GETS LEFT BEHIND OR FORGOTTEN and you will feel the same way i do after just 1 visit
