Very helpful, and in bite sized chunks
Disclosure: I've been on the same email discussion list and in Facebook groups with Richard H. Adin and have read his blog, An American Editor, for years, though I've never met him in person and have no financial interest in this book.I don't think you'll find anyone who is more practical and analytical about the business side of being a freelance editor than Adin. I'm an in-house editor, while he owns and operates an editing service, but I've still incorporated a great deal of his advice about business and editing practices into my own work.This book is a collection of essays from Adin's blog, grouped by topic and polished by two other respected editors, Ruth E. Thaler-Carter and Jack M. Lyon. Adin offers advice on topics like why professional editing is important, levels of editing, author relations (including how to identify clients who just aren't worth the hassle), managing workflow, setting rates that will allow you to live on more than peanut butter and bad noodles, and the future of editing. The Tools section (including discussions of hardware, software, macros and more) has definitely made me a more efficient editor.At my request, my office bought copies of "The Business of Editing" for me and our other editor. But I would gladly have bought it myself and highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about becoming an editor, has just launched an editing career or (like me) has years of experience but knows there's still plenty to learn.
