Most readers’ favorite character from the Drizzt Saga is Jarlaxle the drow elven rogue leader of the Bregan D’Earth. We love Jarlaxle for being courageous enough to manipulate the matron mothers of Menzoberranzan city of spiders. We love him for his code of honor among thieves. And always having another trick up his sleeve.In Servant of the Shard, Jarlaxle has met his match and fallen under the manipulation of Crenshinibon, a magical artifact fused together from the souls of seven undead wizards. What I like about this novel is prime Salvatore, layered intrigue and well articulated action sequences. Also the combinations of characters as Cadderly and Danica from Salvatore’s Cleric Quintet team up with Drizzt’s former foes. Artifact possession is a theme that will recur later in the series. In some ways this book could have been a turning point for a character arc for Jarlaxle, stripping him of his invincibility and deus-ex-machina style resources and stranding him on the surface where his skill at social manipulation would be almost useless. This could have been an interesting direction, but Salvatore chose instead to keep the character of Jarlaxle static as his unbeatable warrior-rogue-wizard, always one or more steps ahead of everyone.
Great plot with interesting, flawed, "real" characters. Salvatore's writing skills are considerable, and his sword-play fight scenes are possibly the best ever penned. His plots are excellently designed and depicted. Salvatore is a master storyteller and is outstanding in setting his readers deep within the fantasy "Realms of the Forbidden" world. His best-selling "Drizzt series" is unforgettable, to be sure! It helps to start at the beginning, with "Homeland" and working your way through the many additions ... you will not ever grow bored, or weary of the characters. "The Servant Of The Shard" is a bit of a diversion from the main Drizzt books, but it is in no way "diminished" at all. If you enjoy a great fantasy book, with fast-paced battle scenes, and with believable and engaging characters, you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Oh how I love Jarlaxle and Artemis together! This is the story of what happens to the crystal shard after Drizzt's fight with Artemis. I was not overly found of the beginning with all the plotting of Calimport but about half way through once all the plans came to light I started to really enjoy it especially those Jarlaxle and Artemis and their exploits!
I love this series. It's written from the perspective of someone who clearly loves playing D&D and the story unfolds much like a great campaign. It's a bit character-centric (the main character Drizz't is a bit of a 'mary sue' type) but otherwise it's full of interesting characters, plots, action, and adventure. Perfect for ages 13+ and anyone who loves adventure.
I bought the whole Sellswords in a set ... this was before I knew that "Servant of the Shard" was actually one of the Drizzt books and I already owned it! Oh, well, it looks good and I needed to re-read it anyway.I'm only on Book II but if you've read any Salvatore you know that you can always count on an exciting read. The comedy aspects of his writings have never gotten much play, but I've laughed more in these books than in any of the Drizzt (and related characters) saga. Jarlaxle in particular is written with many a good zinger in there. Very entertaining.Anyway, your travels with Drizzt are not complete unless you read the Sellswords. (Artemis Entreri is one of my favorite anti-heroes. What would Freud have said with him on the couch?) Colorful, exciting, great characters ... highly recommended.
To be completely honest I have read every book this man has written so my p.o.v. is probably bias at this point, regardless, I love the way the book plays out, I love the different view points from all the different characters, and I absolutely love the assassin and his thought process. As a continued avid fan I just bought the second book of this tril. and can't wait to read the new series with Drizzt!
After being sorely dissapointed with "The Spine of the World" book I was egar to read this book.I was far from dissapointed with this book.There are no good guys, no heros. Its a battle of evil vs. evil. And that is what makes this book one of Salvatore's best.We learn alot about Artemis, but more importantly we learn alot about the drow: Jarlaxle. The drow with an ace up every sleave, and more ways to kill a person than you can count.This story is about the drow band: Bregan D'aerthe, and their attempt at breaking into the surface world. Not to conquer, but for more profitable ventures.When you mix in the Crenshinibon (the crystal shard), everything goes wrong.I highly suggest reading this book. We learn alot about Artemis (not really his origin, but more along the lines of his persona), Jarlaxle, and even Morik the Rogue makes an appearance or two!
Well when I bought this book I believed I was cluelessly diving into another great Drizzt novel. Well in a way I was, this book doesn't have the famed Dark Elf Ranger in it, other then his remarks between books.This book is about his mysterious nemesis Entreri and Jarlaxle. The book highlites two colorful characters as protaganist, but never to far removed from their roots of assasin and rogue.You also get to be delighted by the appearences of other Salvatore characters, that assist Entreri and Jarlaxle in their quest. As a fantasy book this novel has it all, I highly recomend this book to the casual reader and definately to the hardcore Forgotten Realms fans.
