About the Author

Larry Schweikart is a retired professor of history at the University of Dayton. He has written more than twenty books on banking and financial history, business history, and national defense, including The Entrepreneurial Adventure, America’s Victories, 48 Liberal Lies About American History, Seven Events That Made America America, and, with Dave Dougherty, A Patriot’s History of the Modern World. In 2017 he published How Trump Won with Joel Pollak, and in 2019 his biography of Ronald Reagan, Reagan: The American President, appeared. He lives in Chandler, Arizona with his wife, Dee, and has one grown son, Adam. Michael Allen was born and raised in Ellensburg, Washington, and served as a Marine Corps artilleryman in Vietnam. He is a professor emeritus of history at the University of Washington, Tacoma, and is the author of the prize-winning Western Rivermen, 1763–1861 and Rodeo Cowboys in the North American Imagination, as well as several other books on American history and the American West. He lives in Ellensburg, and has three grown children, Jim, Davy, and Caroline.

Comprehensive, well footnoted and researched. STAY AWAY from the American hatefest ZInn book - get this for a real educator's book. I have a huge library of history books - mostly WWII - and noticed that I did not have a good survey book to fill in the gaps of American history. This book is chronologically organized for easy reference and stays on the facts of history, rather than the controversy. A great reference for any historian. Highly recommended.

You know how sometimes the title of a book has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual book? This isn't like that. This is exactly what it says, warts and all. A truly invaluable resource.

Great to have on the shelf

Well, I did like until I found the author on facebook. Ugh.... Very unprofessional etc.... and I'm not sure I trust all the info after finding out some mistakes. Like Trump he'd do better to avoid social media however.Fantastic overview. Homeschooling daughter will be using it for reading as well.Know that it's long.... I have it on audio and it's just about 50 hours.

I purchased the audio book so that I could listen as I drive. There are many, many CDs, but that's because there is so much content. I really like how he seeks to tell it like it was, both the good and the bad, without having any obviously slanted agenda. I am finding out things in our history that are encouraging and uplifting, as well as things that are ugly and disappointing. I am up to the westward expansion and have enjoyed all of the sections thus far. I highly recommend this work.

I used this book to review for the BC Calculus exam, and I managed to score a 5. I did not, however, use any competing calculus review books, so keep that in mind. In summary, I thought it was really helpful for slow and steady practice, and I felt ready going into the exam.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Strengths:1. The book has a ridiculous number of practice questions on all of the topics covered in the exam. In fact, it has 598 practice questions spread out over 10 chapters! On top of that, there are two chapters with miscellaneous practice questions: one has 108 multiple-choice questions, one has 36 free-response questions. And there are still entire practice exams on top of that! If you are looking to score well through sheer practice and repetition, then this is definitely the book to buy. I went through all of the chapters—the book covers both AB and BC—and completed the practice problems at the end, and it took me forever. I spread it out over four months just for slow and steady practice, but it would be impossible to cram in a week. (Just so you know, I did not complete all of the practice exams)2. The practice questions are arguably harder than those on the exam. I struggled to finish some of the multiple choice questions, especially those that apply integration to obscure word problems. During the exam, I thought the questions were quite easy because of the difficult ones that this book occasionally throws at you.Weaknesses:1. The book is honestly too big. I realize that I just placed its size in the "Strengths" category, but for most people the book is just too large, since a lot of students cram in the last week or two. If you use it to supplement classwork and review a month or two in advance, the book will be great. But otherwise, it is probably much too intense.2. The free-response questions (FRQs) do not truly model those that you receive on the exam. Although the book has numerous FRQs that cover all of the important topics, they are not more difficult than the exam's. In fact, I believe they are a tad bit easier, but not to a shocking extent. To properly prepare, look over the released FRQs on the College Board's website; complete them and then check your answers with the scoring guides. This will ensure you succeed on the FRQs, which can occasionally be quite crazy.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Conclusion (TL;DR):This book is really helpful to a dedicated student who completes a majority of the problems in the weeks (or months) leading up to the exam. The book certainly has enough practice, and the problems are difficult enough that the exam will be familiar. The only real downside to this book is that the free-response questions are not a great representation of those on the actual exam. Again, if you look over the released free-response questions on the College Board's website, you will be fine. I would recommend purchasing this book if you are on the edge because it can't hurt to have extra practice, but do keep in mind this is a review book, not a teaching book—do not expect to learn the content from this book alone.Good luck on the AP Exam come May!

I got a concussion late March and another one early April so it was really really difficult for me to study for my AP exams but I really like Barron’s format for reviewing topics. I only got through maybe 1/3 of the book but the stuff I was actually able to review was really helpful, especially their practice questions. They only offer calculus AB at my school but I learned BC on the side from a friend maybe a month before AP exams and the book has great practice questions for the BC topics I actually got to. I ended up getting a 4 with an AB subscore 5, which is mostly accredited to my Calc teacher. BUT, overall I loved the format of this review book and it’s practice questions.

The examples aren't really detailed and it doesn't really teach you like a normal textbook. It gives really vague explanations and confusing examples.

Using this book to prepare for the AB test helped our son achieve a 5. As advertised, the practice tests seemed a bit harder than the actual test. Good luck!

Just recently bought this book to prep for my Calculus BC class in the fall for some summer prep. Overall, the book has great practice problems ranging from easy ones for a quick refresher to hard ones. The thing I absolutely detest about this book is the explanation. Yes, they have the right answers and show some steps, but no word explanations (rarely) and skip a lot of steps. I ended have to look up the steps more in depth in Symolab and it can take me some 20-40 minutes to actually get the problem simply because Barron's cannot list out the steps more in depth. I imagine this would be good if you are just reviewing and supplementing, but as a book to learn like me, I would say any website online is better than this. Will update on how this book helped me with my actual AP exam and if it is good as a supplement! (:

It was very helpful in preparing for the AP Calculus exam. It was a required purchase for the AP class and the teacher based the classwork and lessons around the book at the end of the year to prepare the class for the exam.

Great for an AP calc student, I took both AB and BC and used this Barron's book each year. This is probably the cheapest you can get them unless you get a used one or borrow one, but honestly a new one is worth it. It won't be as much help if you already see someone's answers next to the question or if you're not allowed to write inside it (I seriously bought a new one after AB for my BC year because it wouldn't have helped me if I saw all of my answers already written out). This was definitely a huge huge help for me throughout the years as well as cramming close to the AP tests. Sometimes Barron's doesn't do the best job at explaining topics but the whole style of the book will help prepare you for the exam. I got 5's both years so Barron's is definitely doing something right, good luck!

Too intensive for the AB Calculus test but favorable for the BC test. Goes WAAAAAY into depth for this AP test so I'd recommend getting another book. If you're looking for practice problems, this book's questions are more difficult than the others and more so difficult than the AP test which can be good to help better prepare you, but can be discouraging if it becomes too difficult for someone.

One of the best. I have read over50 of Sandra Hills books and this is one of the best.it was a can't put down. Must finish.

I never read books twice, and I picked this one up wondering if I'd read the earlier version? I realized after a few pages that I had read the earlier version, yet I read it again. Going back to the gold rush days twice was fun! I love Sandra Hill books, and I think I have read most of them, but this one is especially enticing, sensual, dangerous, and the descriptive language makes me feel like I am there with them, worried about the grizzly bears and crazy desperadoes.

Sandra Hill never disappoints. I love her characters and their stories. Rafe and Helen were so much fun to read about

This book was just stupid. I wasn't expecting great literature from a romance novel but this was worse than usual. The plot could have been fun but it wasn't developed well. The characters were totally predictable and one-dimensional. I did read the whole book but am not sure why I wasted the time. Sandra Hill has written books which are much better.

Anything Sandra Hill writes is amazing.

Knowledge about wedding photography.

I have followed Michelle's work for years, so I was excited to read this new book. She covers every stage of the event, walking you through some of the must-have shots (and giving lots of examples along the way). Her style is a blend of documentary and environmental portraiture, and she covers both in this guide to shooting weddings. From using natural light to supplementing with on or off camera flash, she clearly explains how she captures the moments on a wedding day consistently and beautifully. There is a lot of great information in this book, but I found the "real weddings" section to be especially helpful. It's a lovely guide and whether you are new or have several weddings under your belt, you will find something useful in here.

This is a wonderful and informative guide to wedding photography. It covers everything from posing to lighting and Michelle Turner explains things very thoughtfully. The picture are also gorgeous!

This is one of the most information-dense technical reference books I've read in a long time. By this I mean -- it packs a tremendous amount of useful detail on each page. I'm coming from this as a 20+ year user of database tools, MCSA in SQL Server and someone motivated to really learn/apply Power BI as a consultant. This book really delivers in terms of in-depth explanations and content you can use to create PBI solutions. It goes above and beyond in another dimension as well: the authors very useful digressions on best-practises and real-world advice for things like visualizations and frameworks for managing users' competing needs. This is truly a useful text for someone interested in designing / deploying / managing mid-size corporate installations of BI solutions using Microsoft tools.Caution -- This is not an introductory text. If you are interested in casual use of PBI, there are probably more accessible books out there.It is easy to give this 5 stars on its content -- but would also mention a couple of minor things: - the included code samples are not directly useable. The author cautions about this in the text. Of 3 points raised, this is this the most significant. It would have been nice to be able to eyeball the worked examples on my workstation. - Minor: The index in the back is pretty sparse. For example, you won't find "hierarchy" mentioned anywhere there but have to read through the table of contents to find that section. - Minor: The printing / paper / binding quality is fine -- but I wish Packt would put more thought into typography. It's easier to digest this kind of material when the publisher uses more finesse in use of different sized/numbered heads. As-is, the chapter content just seems to run together.FWIW -- I've previously read: - Teo Lachev's "Applied MS PowerBI" (2nd ed) -- which is also good, particularly for someone first experimenting with Power BI. - Russo & Ferrari "Definitive Guide to Dax" (1st ed) -- the go-to reference on DAX.Aside: I have no affiliation with the author or publisher. I purchased this on Amazon, etc.

Phenomenal book. A ton of information, so please expect to read this book once and then start to use it as a reference until you are comfortable. Hits on many topics in the BI world, almost too many. Also helpful if you are looking to become an expert in all “3 Phases” of the BI process.

If you're looking for enterprise-level Power BI deployment, this is the bible. I learned a lot about best practices, and what I already knew was explained very clearly.

Book did not provide the information I needed. Book and Power BI are not ready fro prime time.

I just started this book and already have found it incredibly useful. I relied heavily on Brett's first book in my Power BI work. This new one is wonderful and updated to include the latest features. What I love about Brett's books is that he provides a higher level view than the Microsoft free online education, so you can understand how the different features and methods of doing things interact and compare before diving into the details, which are also provided in a clear and concise way. The information is presented from the ground-up in a logical manner that promotes a solid foundation for learning. In addition, I can easily skim the Table of Contents to find exactly what I need, and it covers every essential Power BI topic. Brett is truly the premier author for books in this field.

This book is for everyone who runs Power BI in a corporate environment and of course for those who plan to do it. It gives an excellent overview over the Power BI ecosystem. But it doesn't stop there and provides all the details as well. Very well written and full of details and good advice.A treasure trove and absolute MUST for everyone serious about Power BI.
